CNN —Experts fear an already active hurricane season could come to an eventful and exceptional end as unusually warm, storm-boosting ocean temperatures and a slow-to-emerge El Niño combine. The first half of October is typically the final stretch of the busiest time of the Atlantic hurricane season. The battle between warm ocean water and the effect of El Niño has posed a forecasting challenge throughout this hurricane season, as one factor is seemingly negating the other. “Usually as we get into the back half of the hurricane season, El Niño tends to dominate, even if the Atlantic is warm. “Is El Niño at some point going to say, ‘Forget this, I’m in charge?’” Klotzbach said.

CNN —A hurricane watch has been issued for portions of Florida’s Gulf Coast as the state braces for Tropical Storm Idalia, which is expected to strengthen to a hurricane and make landfall this week. The hurricane watch stretches from Englewood to Indian Pass, including Tampa Bay, according to the National Hurricane Center’s Sunday afternoon update. In addition to the hurricane watch, a tropical storm watch has been issued for the Gulf Coast of Florida from Englewood to Chokoloskee and the Dry Tortugas. Idalia is forecast to drop 3 to 6 inches of rain on western Cuba, Florida’s west coast, the Panhandle and southern Georgia, with isolated totals of 10 inches, the hurricane center said. Anyone living in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Cuba, and the northern Gulf and Florida coast should monitor the forecast in the coming days.

CNN —Florida vacations are back on, sans stinky seaweed. In April, the seaweed set a record, with scientists identifying 3 million tons of sargassum in the Caribbean Sea. The sargassum that lands on Florida beaches originates in the Gulf of Mexico and the western Caribbean, Hu went on. Small amounts of the seaweed may still land on Florida beaches, but not in large enough quantities to present a problem, according to Hu. But while Florida enjoys clean beaches, in the eastern Caribbean, “they’ll still see a lot of sargassum,” Hu noted.

Two teachers from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, were among thousands to have Southwest flights canceled. Marcus and Andrea Grasenick said they missed their honeymoon cruise after a canceled flight. Eleven days later, Andrea Grasenick was still waiting on her two suitcases to be returned. "I could see our bags outside in the snow from inside the airport," Andrea Grasenick told Insider. The airline canceled over 2,900 flights on December 26, accounting for about half of all canceled flights across the world that day.

Tropical Storm Lisa strengthened Tuesday as it pushed across the western Caribbean south of the Cayman Islands and was forecast to make landfall, likely as a hurricane, in Central America as early as Wednesday. Sept 27 (Reuters) - Airlines canceled over a thousand U.S. flights on Tuesday and Wednesday and several Florida airports are halting operations as they braced for impact from Hurricane Ian, which was set to make landfall in the state. Airlines had scrapped 321 flights on Tuesday and 1,148 on Wednesday across the U.S., according to flight-tracking website Flightaware.com. ET Tuesday, while Tampa Airport will halt operations at 5 p.m. and Orlando International Airport will cease operations at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Federal Aviation Administration said it was "closely monitoring" Hurricane Ian and its path. American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O) said it has issued a travel alert for 20 airports in the western Caribbean and Florida.

Hurricane Ian continues to strengthen as Florida and Cuba brace for strong winds and possible floods this week. Currently, in the western Caribbean Sea about 195 miles southeast of the western tip of Cuba, Ian has maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, with higher gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center. A hurricane warning is in place for the Cuban provinces of Isla de Juventud, Pinar del Rio and Artemisa while a hurricane watch was issued along the west coast of Florida from north of Englewood to the Anclote River, including Tampa Bay. The hurricane is forecast to bring 8 to 15 inches of rain to central West Florida, 3 to 8 inches to the rest of the Florida Peninsula and 4 to 6 inches to the Keys. This rain can cause flash and urban flooding mid-to-late week in central Florida as well as across the Florida Keys and peninsula through midweek.
